I came to the conclusion last night, while reading The Fifth Head of Cerebus and listening to music in bed, that iTunes's Visualization feature is very well-suited to Pink Floyd, but not much else. When Shine On You Crazy Diamond began to play, accompanied by throbbing tunnels of color and Julia sets, I had a brief flashback to a time before before I was born. "So this is what it was like," I thought. It did not work so well for the Nields.

Another conclusion: (I Don't Want to Go to) Chelsea is ideal morning workout music.

I slept fitfully last night, probably because I was downloading the 60MB system update (10.3.3) from Apple, and I don't relax well when my computer is in the middle of a project. (Note to OSX users: there's a new security update available for download, as of 6AM this morning.) Something woke me at 7AM -- it sounded like a loud snore, i.e. me, but I thought it might be the computer vomiting up its hard drive -- and I never really fell asleep again.

Nevertheless, I recommenced work on Mistigris this afternoon after I woke. it's probably the most overtly political story I've ever begun, though even holding that honor it's not terribly political. I'd written the first paragraphs before, but got bogged down when I realized I had no plot to go with my character. I now have something approaching a legible signpost, at least. I must say it's a lot more fun to write when my entire music collection is a mouseclick away.

Kendra needed help adapting a map for her Oberlin talk on Thursday, so I spent ninety minutes wrestling with AppleWorks after she got home. (It is surprisingly tricky to get AppleWorks to import graphics at anything other than 72dpi.) I've got that sorted now, though I'll need to add text boxes and so on after work tonight; at least I won't need to learn that lesson again. The map should look pretty posh, though.

Postscript: Oh look, another flashback. Ashcroft is going after porn, now. *sigh*
