I was lucky enough to find Kill Bill I on the just-returned shelf at Liberty Street Video, and, armed with a Trader Joe's pesto pizza and a Sprecher's cream soda, sat down to watch it at midnight. It was masterful; I think this is Tarantino's most mature directing, even though it's remarkably immature in places. Uma gets more beautiful as she ages, doesn't she?
The whole film is a love letter for fans of 70s kung fu, from the opening titles on; it uses hackneyed tropes (the master blacksmith who's sworn never to create another weapon, the assassin in the schoolgirl uniform) to construct a very thoughtful nonlinear narrative. The anime chapter was probably my favorite; the spreading blood beneath the bed was beautifully done. I'm sure I missed a lot of subtle details amidst all the over-the-top violence, but there were plenty picture-perfect touches to pick up on—Bill's wallpaper is reminiscent of cleavers, e.g.
No, come to think of it, it's Charlie's Angels—if two of the angels beat up the third and left her for dead, and the third in turn swore bloody revenge on them and Charlie. I was planning to see Hellboy tomorrow afternoon, but I'm tempted to make it a double feature with Kill Bill II now.
