Prints of peas
May. 1st, 2004 06:45 pm(It's always a debate, isn't it? Honesty in mood-iconography, or hearty deception?)
I am emprintered. I opted for the Canon i860 ($150 at Circuit City), due to a) universally high ratings, b) cheap ink cartridges, and c) the ability to print borderless 4x6 prints. After removing the innumerable bits of orange tape that had been holding the printer in traction for shipping, I installed the five (!) ink cartridges, installed the driver, and printed a test photo without a hitch. The prints amaze me, though admittedly I'd been using a ten-year-old HP DeskJet; they're nigh-indistinguishable from prints I'd get from a developer. The blacks are a little soft, and there are just-visible roller-marks on the surface, but apart from that they're fabulous. Since CC was having a two-for-one sale, I bought two packs of 4x6 glossy Kodak paper (200 sheets for $30), and now I'm glad I did. I also picked up a cassette adapter, which will enable us to listen to my iPod in the car.
Today we attended the Library Book Sale. I was more restrained than I might have been, since I still have a dozen unread paperbacks from the last one on my bedside table, but I did grab Jack Vance's Lyonesse and John Varley's Millennium. I also snagged a half-dozen CDs of unknown quality; at $1.50 each I felt I could afford to experiment, and my iPod has made me more likely to listen to good-but-not-beloved music. (The CDs include Melissa Etheridge's eponymous CD, the Proclaimers, Bryan Adams, James MacMurtry, and a horribly teen-targeted "cool" sampler CD from Avery. You know, the labels people.)
USPS.com tells me that OFIH's birthday present (mailed Priority on Tuesday) has been "misrouted." They assure me it will be delivered as soon as possible, but they won't tell me where it is; it could have been misrouted to Nairobi for all I know. The plan was for it to be awaiting OFIH upon her return to Maui, but who knows? Blarrgh.
