Clean getaway
Aug. 18th, 2004 11:52 pmFirst off, let me welcome my State Theater friends, whom I now know are reading my journal. And printing it out. And posting it on the bulletin board at the theater. Hi, guys! You're all very very funny. Ha ha! If the theater burns down, it wasn't me!
I know about this because K. and I went back to Ann Arbor today, chiefly to clean the old apartment sufficiently well that Media Real Estate won't have a fit when they walk in. This entailed waking up at around 10AM, driving for two and a half hours, cleaning for three, and driving home again. We are grimy and tired and somewhat grouchy, but the apartment is much much cleaner than it was. (Do not mock the power of Clorox Gel to clean up linoleum.)
To buffer the cleaning a little, we had the excellent buffet lunch at Raja Rani, shopped at Borders (where I bought Abhorsen and the new Miéville, Iron Council), visited folks at the State Theater, and got celebratory ice cream at Kilwin's. It's a good thing we did, because
rainbowravenx happened to walk by, looking very cute in a Union Jack shirt. This is a good thing because I did not know she was
rainbowravenx—she will always be Bodice Girl in my mind—and I would have lost all contact with her if she hadn't happened by. Ah, serendipity.
So that was me saying goodbye to Ann Arbor. It was a little sad, but the traffic snarls and blissfully heedless pedestrians reminded me why I was getting sick of that town. Then again, I'll miss being able to walk fifteen minutes and find dozens of restaurants, bookstores up the wazoo, the Wazoo music store, Orchid Lane, two independent theaters (both of which I got into for free), sidewalks flocking with pretty girls in skimpy clothing. I'll miss having West Park for a backyard. I'll miss seeing Cope, the orange cat, preening on his porch when I walk past, and I'll miss going up on the roof of the State Theater and looking out over my town.
How very odd to be gone.
