Encounters with incompetence
Jan. 5th, 2005 12:06 amOn the phone with RCN tech support:
Then, at dinner with my mom:
Me: "My mom just got a new eMac, and she can't connect to your SMTP server."I, of course, worked down the hall from ENIAC at UPenn, but why tell him that? In "the computer world," we gloss over things like that. (The server issue, incidentally, is still unresolved.)
Him: "Uhhh...an eMac?"
Me: "A Macintosh."
Him: "Oh, an Apple. See, in the computer world, 'emac' can mean all sorts of things. It's an editor, and the first computer after WWII was called ENIAC. There's a bit of free trivia for you."
Then, at dinner with my mom:
Mom: "How do I open these little gifts people send me?"In happier news, remember this entry of mine? The Big Daddy CD that's worth up to $100? I found it in a used CD bin for $4 today. Any suggestions on the best way to sell it? (We also picked up some Cranberries, Rasputina, Beatles, New Hampshire contra music, R.E.M., Simple Minds, and Crowded House...all for $40!)
Me: "Gifts?"
Mom: "Little gift pictures, like of angels or trees. You know how most pictures say J-P-G? These say G-I-F. That stands for gift, right?"
