jere7my: muskrat skull (Sleepy me.)
It takes eleven hours to get from Swarthmore to Saratoga, apparently. Nine and a half of them must be spent sitting in PHL, experiencing Standby Hell.

[livejournal.com profile] showergrrl, sweetly enough, dropped me off at the airport before noon. I actually set foot on the initially targeted airplane (ETD 1:20PM), only to find someone in my seat (which also happened on the flight down) and no other seats to be had (which did not). Bustle bustle, off the plane I went. Fortunately, there was another flight, only three hours later—but wait, did I say three? I meant six, because the 4:15 was delayed for mechanical reasons. Coincidentally, the 6:20 was also delayed three hours for mechanical reasons, so when 6:20 (the time, not the airplane) arrived, all of the ticketed passengers on the 6:20 flocked to the delayed 4:15, pushing me to #31 on the standby list. Happily, there was an 8:00 flight, and that was only delayed one hour by a late arrival, and another half hour by a lengthy queue of planes for takeoff, so I actually landed in ALB shortly after 10PM. I am so terribly glad I woke up early for my 9PM departure.

(What happened? Well, they were reluctant to tell me, but finally one of the cart drivers let slip that they'd traced the trouble to a redheaded ticket agent on Nantucket. Just as I'd suspected.)

This was a grueling capper to quite a pleasant weekend, though. I spent a fabulous afternoon with Katy, playing with the baby snapping turtle in her lab, taking photos in the Crum, discovering the Lamp-Post Graveyard, and eating brownies in her room in ML. I got to have lunch and extended conversation with the always-vivacious [livejournal.com profile] flammifera, who is sun-bronzed and henna'ed and seems quite happy with life as a paralegal. Larry and Megan had dinner with me at Heng's Thai, then whisked me away to their abode for a good six hours of Battlestar Galactica and Robot Chicken and Big Trouble in Little China and collapsing the spring-loaded recliner under [livejournal.com profile] showergrrl. (It never gets old.) I got to see [livejournal.com profile] eclectic_boy before he was whisked away to Salzburg, and many other people besides, some of whom were foolish enough to play back-to-back games of Civ and Age of Ren for my viewing pleasure. I met Alan (who is crazy for the gaming) and Mary (who can crack every joint in her body, but I don't mind, 'cos *blink*) and David (who is, almost eerily, a young DVS). [livejournal.com profile] showergrrl not only let me sleep in her air-conditioned room but also introduced me to Invader Zim and cuddled me when I got sad. I got to be on the happy end of confusing and amusing keyboard-sharing in IRC. I ate a cheesesteak and a chick-parm and a fried egg sandwich with blessed scrapple on it. I brought home a box of Tastycakes. I made bad puns. O yes.

I did not get to see Miriam, which was a disappointment, and the long-gaming meant I didn't actually get to do any gaming of my own, but I was pretty happy to sit around and let my brain drip out of my ears for a couple of days. It's centering and soothing to wander idly around Swarthmore for a while. And now I know what the new mailroom looks like. Bwa-ha, I say.

As a postscript to my last post, and by way of testing my new photo-hosting abilities, here is a pic of the Lamp-Post Graveyard. Cut. )
