Due to one thing and another, I failed to acquire a pumpkin until today. The (aptly-named for Halloween) Price Chopper had thrown away all their normal pumpkins, leaving only miniature pumpkins, so I had to settle for a small (but still evil!) jack-o-lantern this year. Fewer toasted seeds for Kendra, alas.

But they also had this...thing. This gourd thing. With tentacles. It might have grown on the ground, or it might have flopped out of the briny deep in the vicinity of Innsmouth. If ever there were a gourd to fear, if ever there were a gourd to keep far from your sleeping self, this was it. Naturally, I bought it. It's currently the centerpiece on our dining room table. See the Evil! )

And, oho! We just got our first (and probably only) trick-or-treater—Dan's daughter, in a very fetching hat, who braved the spiders in search of candy. I am pleased the webbing did not go totally to waste.

I spent a bit of time in the cemetery today, wrapped in my cloak, because I felt I should. It was actually quite beautiful: the white monuments, the autumn leaves, the sunset. A flock of birds soared by overhead, their underbellies painted gold by the fading light. I didn't see another soul.

Happy Halloween, every one and every thing.
