I wonder if some studio exec confused Guy Fawkes with St. Patrick during the release date discussions. Hmm.

We saw V for Vendetta tonight, and, speaking as a casual fan of the original, I was quite well pleased. I think they indulged in cartoonish excess toward the end, turning xylophone mallets into sledgehammers (metaphorically), and Natalie Portman should never again be allowed near a British accent, but all in all I was quite swept up. (They lost my favorite Rolling Stones quote, but I am only slightly bitter.) I can understand Alan Moore's dismissal of the script, but I think he suffers from closeness to his own work, as well as from being a loon; the result here is well worth seeing, and it doesn't shy away from the moral gray. (Also, it has Stephen Fry, which should be enough recommendation for anyone.)

The Right is going to hate this movie.

A few spoilery thoughts behind a cut. )
