adfamiliares spilled a small amount of coffee on her iBook's keyboard this morning, and by this afternoon her typing had begu t oloolok ke ths. For a while we were worried that the speakers and Airport card had been fried as well, but then we realized that the keyboard thought the shift key was always down, and thus was booting into Safe Disk Mode (which disables such fripperies as audio). It works perfectly well if we disconnect the keyboard and attach a USB replacement, so all we need is a new iBook keyboard, and since she wasn't taking it with her to Greece on Sunday anyway it hardly matters. But it had us scared for a while.
If you're wondering why
sinsofthedove disappeared from the net, well, she made the mistake of asking me for help diagnosing her iPod troubles (iTunes wasn't seeing her iPod, for some reason). I suggested she take the very reasonable step of trashing the prefs and rebooting, and my phone rang two minutes later to bring glad tidings of "YOU BROKE IT!" She was seeing the dreaded flashing question mark, and nothing I could think of would make it go away. (She had neither system disks nor a handy external boot drive.) Now, she had been having hard drive troubles already, and was in fact already planning on taking her computer to the Apple Store tomorrow, but whatever she/I/we did made it that much more urgent.
*sigh* I seem to be emitting an aura of technical entropy today. Keep your laptops well away from me, lads and lasses.
