My exciting life
Jul. 20th, 2006 08:57 pmI've been experimenting, for the past couple of days, with working out of Uncommon Grounds on
adfamiliares's laptop (although tonight it was less "working" and more "listening to
carpenter try to convince me to attend the SWIL reunion in October"). Benefits include air conditioning; iced chai, white-chocolate-chip cookies, and chicken salad bagel sandwiches; and being surrounded by Real Live People while
adfamiliares is away in NYC. Downsides include the noise level; the fact that I'm spending money about half as quickly as I'm earning it; and the sudden pangs of anxiety when my job requires me to look at porn. (Fortunately, I keep the sound muted.) It makes for a nice change of pace, anyway.
I've been a good little consumer this week. We finally bought the gas grill I "got" for my birthday, a Weber Baby-Q, which is just the right size for two hamburgers, two buns, and two ears of corn. Grilled burgers really are better than stovetop, and I enjoy the purely American power of filling the neighborhood with delicious grill-smoke from my perch high above the parking lot.
I also bought a new A/V receiver, since our 10-year-old four-channel model was on the blink. The new one offers 7.1 channels of surround sound, DTS, pretty lights, a wizard named Barry, and an inboard drycleaning service. Since I bought the display model, Best Buy gave me a 10% discount, so I saved $35. Yay! Of course, it was missing the remote control, but I ordered a new one from Yamaha...for $35! Yay! *sigh* (This doesn't alter the fact that it lists for $550, so I'm not too unhappy.) In the process of setting things up, I got a chance to solder some speaker plugs, which I always enjoy.
Finally, I now own two pairs of shorts. Yes, the heat wave finally caused me to expose my knees to the world. The shorts are baggy. I am not convinced that I don't look like an idiot, but so far nobody has pointed and laughed—no more than usual, anyway—and they do keep me cooler.
Some rep company is doing The Tempest in Congress Park, and I pass them on my way to and from my coffee-shop workplace. It looks like Shakespeare Goes Hawaiian, but it is lively and colorful, and Ariel is one hot cookie.
[Note: my music is by Roosevelt Graves and Brother, not by Roo. Although I just had a great idea for a Disney movie.]
