Bank of America has a "Keep the Change" program, which essentially means they'll round up everything you buy with your check card to the nearest dollar and deposit the difference in a savings account. I.e., if I buy something for $7.17, 83¢ will go into my savings, and I'll note down an $8.00 expenditure in my register. This is a nice way to encourage people to save money, and it makes balancing the checkbook a lot simpler.

I wonder how this might transfer to charitable micro-giving. What if my 83¢, instead of going into my savings, went to a charity (or charities) of my choice? An average of 50¢ on every check card transaction would magically become a donation, without me having to think about it. By the end of the year, I might have donated a couple of hundred dollars, and it never would have felt like a burden.

Whaddya think, sirs? Good idea? Is it already possible?
