Mighty mighty toe-biter
May. 9th, 2007 04:48 pmI came home from the coffee shop last night to find a giant water bug, probably a Lethocerus, crawling across the porch. The name suited it — it was over three inches long, the sort of bug that eats fish (and I'm not making that up). I'd never seen one in the wild before. Gus-Gus, who was out on her lead, watched it with affronted intensity, and I had to restrain her from pouncing until it flew away. It flew back later, when I wasn't watching, and I found her proudly carrying it around in her mouth like a potato chip. Then it bit her tongue and she spat it out. Amazingly, it appeared to be unharmed, and flew merrily off into the parking lot.
( See a prettier, but less impressive, pic behind the cut. )
