May. 31st, 2008 03:31 amI reached page 300 tonight. For the last month and a half, that's been my goal for the end of May, and look: 21 hours to spare! I had a burst of caffeine-fueled creativity in Diesel a few weeks ago, and generated an outline for these northern chapters that has proven quite efficacious. (I was going to note that efficacious things can only be "quite", not "very", but Google proves me wrong, by a factor of 10.) Since I reached 200 at the end of 2007, that makes for about 100 pages in 150 days. Getting there.
This section is a little unsettling — various people do things that are more or less nauseating, including our protagonist, and people wind up miserable or damaged or dead. It's all necessary and logical, but it leaves a bad taste in the mouth...which I think reinforces the point I'm trying to make. It's hard to orchestrate anyway. I've just started chapter seventeen (aka "If this were Dragaera, I'd be done by now"). Scrutiny is in bed, with the tip of a dagger and a bent brass gear in front of him. When he gets up, I get to write a funny scene I've had in my head for a long time, based firmly on historical precedent and also utterly unbelievable.
