Dear Boston:
The Slutcracker is BRILLIANT. It sold out the main theater at the Somerville, and earned a ten-minute standing ovation from a crowd of hipsters and middle-aged ladies and assorted perverts. I honestly didn't expect much in the way of professionalism, but the dancing was really quite lovely and technically adept, with stage combat and on-stage costume changes and hula hoop spinning and belly dancing and whatever else you can think of. The show itself is a spot-on bawdy parody of the Nutcracker (hint: the beloved toy that comes to life is NOT a nutcracker) that manages to be coy and sweet and sexy and hilarious, all in pantomime. The costumes were lovely. It's all terribly happy and high-energy; the whole house was clapping along to the curtain call music.
So, yes: recommended! Go see it, Boston! There's no nudity (well, except for one wardrobe malfunction), but there are a lot of pasties and innuendo and assorted burlesquerie. Future shows areSaturday and (← sold out) Sunday at 8PM, and Sunday at 2PM. I got there half an hour early, and had my choice of seats in the front row, FYI.
[Edit: Let the Right One In just opened at the Somerville as well. Just so y'all know.]
