While biking through a torrential downpour, turning a corner on the (very slick) boardwalk that passes under the BU Bridge, my wheels skidded out from under me. I had enough time to notice how very acute an angle the ground and I were making before I fell, hard, on my right side. I was lucky — my ankle is a bit scraped up, but I'm otherwise fine.
Ironically, I was on my way to REI for a bike maintenance class at the time. Pathetically, it had been moved to the night before. But it was a good thing I was there — not only did I need to pick up tire levers before my trip, but when I got back on my bike I saw that the fall had bent my rear wheel. Visions of a ruined weekend galloped through my mind, but it turns out REI is incredibly efficient at repairs. The guy trued my wheel in ten minutes for ten dollars.
All is now well. On my way home, I found used copies of Ubik and On the Road in Brookline Booksmith. Looking up?
