Pilgrims and dwarfsploitation
Nov. 6th, 2010 02:14 amFinally saw Scott Pilgrim tonight. Thought it was brilliant fun, and emotionally satisfying. Not having read the comics, if I had to describe it in one pithy phrase, I would say, "Kill Bill meets the Josie and the Pussycats movie, if Kill Bill were a pastiche of video games instead of kung fu movies, and Josie were played by Michael Cera." Yeah. That's pretty on, there.
So, funny story: I went tonight because I had some leftover Groupon passes for the Brattle, which expired today. I'd arranged to meet
kdsorceress, but when I showed up I saw
ruthling and G, and then
tirerim and
herbertinc, and then EmilyKate and Neil — none of whom had communicated with one another. I was all set to get with the largesse and hand out some free passes, but none of them wanted any, because they all had passes that were also set to expire today. Turns out the big half-off Groupon sale was exactly one year ago, and the passes are good for a year. Most of the theater, in fact, was there on passes. When I got my "free large popcorn and 2 small drinks" (via a coupon, also set to...you get the picture), I said to the director-guy, who was serving me, "Happy Groupon Expiration Day!" And he totally used my line during the pre-show announcements. (I don't mind — I write good material.)
He also said they were going to be showing a Magnetic Fields documentary, and had asked Stephin Merritt what films they should play with it, expecting him to list some musicals or something. Stephin responded, "Dwarfsploitation!" I leaned over to
kdsorceress and said, "Oh, man, I would love to see The Sinful Dwarf on the big screen" just before he said, "So, we're looking for a 35mm print of The Sinful Dwarf...." I whooped, entirely by myself, and got an "Okay, one guy is excited." (Which I am. This movie is indescribable, folks.) He's also looking for a print of For Your Height Only, a Filipino Bond ripoff about Agent 00. I haven't seen it, but you can catch the trailer, in which the League of Evil meets in my grandmother's sitting room, here. (Sinful Dwarf trailer here, in glorious mono.)
Riding home in the November dark, I confess I got a little video game soundtrack going in my head as I deftly dodged potholes and arrowed through leaf piles. Double score...good...good...FLAWLESS VICTORY!!!
