jere7my: (Graar!)

Last week, I bought some peppermint extract, for putting in my peppermintless hot cocoa. The bottle is not made for pouring (more for dribbling), so, lacking an eyedropper, I performed some siphoning experiments with a straw, then drew careful gradations on it with a Sharpie — 1/4 tsp., 1/2 tsp., etc. — to mark how much water it sucked up at various depths.

I tested the system tonight. It worked quite well — except (it turns out) Sharpie is soluble in peppermint extract.

D'oh.

(Also, peppermint extract floats on hot milk. I recommend stirring.)

ew.

(Peppermint extract is something ridiculous, like 95% alcohol, which is probably why it floats so noticeably.)

Also why it dissolves Sharpie, which is alcohol-based. Applies to extracts in general, too.

What you need is a lab marker - I was going to say I had no idea where one bought them outside of lab supply catalogs, but you can apparently order them through Amazon.
