Lost and gone

jere7myI watched the first half of the two-hour Lost! pilot on ABC tonight, and I'm certainly ready to watch more. (ABC, for unknown reasons, split the pilot in half, which made the first half feel slow and a little empty, but I still liked it.) Premise: survivors of a plane crash try to survive on a deserted island where Weird Shit Is Happening. It's interesting: I like Dominick Monaghan (aka Merry in Lord of the Rings) a lot; Terry O'Quinn's character is sending intriguingly weird vibes with very little information; there're a lot of hints of alarming backstory for the characters; the island weirdness (without getting spoilery) looks like it could be a modernization of one of my favorite genres. Huge cast, which I tend to like.
There was one particular moment of brilliance: the female lead was stealing hiking boots from a corpse, and looked over to see Terry O'Quinn (you may know him from Millennium) doing that smiling-with-an-orange-peel gag. Her total nonreaction, and the way his grin subsided, were beautifully played, though I'm not sure I'm doing it justice. Moments like that, moments which don't take the obvious path and therefore work to illuminate character, aren't common on TV.
Of course, it might not have been a good idea to watch a show about a plane crash the day before I fly to Swarthmore. Which I am, indeed, doing. I'm arriving at 4:30 Thursday and leaving on Monday around 3PM, and I'm quite looking forward to meeting many of you (and demonstrating that, yes, I'm actually a nice and non-sketchy guy). I'm showing The Dark Crystal in the ML lounge at 11PM on Friday, and anyone who'll be around is welcome to show up. (Beware the Blob, though. Ooga booga. I myself am wearing my special anti-absorption boots all weekend.) I'm nearly done packing, and need to get to bed early so I can wake up to find the Cleveland airport before my plane leaves without me. K.'s Chris is visiting while I'm gone, arriving shortly after I leave, so it works out neatly.
(Remember those wee caterpillars from my last entry? I just found one on my little finger. Must've hitched a ride. Hope he enjoyed Lost!)
