"...took a long time to come." OKGo recorded that song in 2004, which was not our year.

2006, on the other hand....

There was a wonderful moment last night on IRC, at about 2AM, when I asked, "Holy moley—is it possible we could still take the senate?" And it looks like we have; barring a bizarre recount upset in Virginia, the Democrats will have 51 seats. It was an exhilarating night; there were times when I was sure that the Greens would be a spoiler, when I was sure that MO was out of reach. But I stuck to my guns when people (on IRC and dailykos) saw Webb down by 22,000 votes and said there was no way to make it up, that we'd lost the senate; I was looking at Richmond and seeing a net 15,000 unreported Webb votes just lurking in the ether, waiting to coalesce, and knew it would at least be close. I'm proud of that prediction; I don't often have political acumen. :) Both Houses look like they're in our hands. And now we can look forward to a Rumsfeld-free world, too. Wow.

On a personal note, Kirsten Gillibrand won with 53% of the vote, which makes us pretty darn happy here; her volunteers worked themselves haggard, and it paid off. New Hampshire got a new blue coat of paint—both House seats and most of the local government changed hands last night—which will thrill my mom. Stem cell research got a boost, the abortion ban was shot down.

I wish people wanted nice gay couples to marry, but I guess this wasn't the year for that. Everything else, though, has me glowing—a pall has been lifted from the skies of America. Congratulations, everybody. Time to get to work.
