The Beech Mountain hike (West Ridge to South Ridge to Valley) is three hikes in one — a lakeside stroll, a steep, sunny ascent with sudden blue-sky vistas of the lake and the coast and the Cranberry Isles, and a descent through mossy, sun-dappled woods like something out of Tolkien. (See above — one of my favorite photos from the trip. It looks more like a fantasy book cover than a photograph, to me.) On the bald summit is an old fire tower (previously posted here), from which you can see the whole island.

The whole set is here, and all my Acadia photos will eventually end up here.
