Jonesing Blue
Sep. 13th, 2009 01:18 amI've been, slightly twitchily, adapting to city life after a week in Acadia, and wondering when I'll be able to return. Turns out I may be able to get a fix half an hour from home, on Rte. 93: the 7000-acre Blue Hills Reservation near Quincy offers "scenic views, varied terrain and 125 miles of trails." The highest peak is higher than Gorham in Acadia (635' vs. 525'), and rocky, so there's a bit of rugged climbing available, as well as pleasant strolls around ponds and everything in between. Sounds promising! My Camelbak sees use around town, when I'm biking, but I'm glad my new Vasque hiking shoes won't have to hibernate 'til next summer. And we can start making a dent in the dozen Clif bars we failed to eat.
I've been to the Fells, but hadn't heard of the Blue Hills Reservation before. Not sure when I'll make it down, and it won't have the rugged pink granite sloping roughly into the glass-green sea, but it's good to know it's there.
