This morning I was treated to a special 5AM performance of Every Sound I've Ever Heard by A. Stupid Mockingbird, from its jaunty perch atop our neighbors' roof. It belted out one sound after another, with a few seconds in between each one (presumably it was holding for applause). Not only did it imitate the neighborhood birds, as you'd expect, but also seagulls, a car alarm, crickets, and three distinct telephone rings.

It was impressive, I'll admit that much. I should really be honored to have the Michael Winslow of the avian world living in my neighborhood. But mostly I found myself wishing I owned a BB gun.

My morning performance was Your Attic Seems Really Nice, performed by a variety of small chubby little birds who seemed to want to try to find a way in there. Luckily, our bed is at least four feet from the side of the house where they were. Fneh, stoopid birds.

I guess that is worse than "I forget what I wanted from you, but I'll ask loudly for it anyway" as performed by The Cats.

Though I sometimes wish we hadn't bought tickets for the entire performance run....

Maybe my cats are on leave, and we've had understudies for the past few weeks!

Somehow, this post reminds me that on the back of Gordon Shumway's bouillabaseball card is the factoid "The only record Gordon ever broke was In the Still of the Night".
