Remember stirges, those flying bloodsuckers from the Monster Manual? Ever wonder where they came from? Blame the ancient Romans, who apparently thought the idea of nocturnal flying critters was pretty creepy: the name is a corruption of Latin strix, meaning "owl", from which we get the scientific order Strigiformes.

(Is strega — Italian for witch — related? I do not know.) (Edit: thoroughbass says yes!)
