Shepard Fairey this ain't

I've been perusing old issues of White Dwarf, the British answer to Dragon, that I...acquired. Dave Pether's cover for issue 24 (April/May 1981), shown on the right, looked strangely familiar. The famous shot of Raquel Welch from the One Million Years B.C. poster explains why. Photo reference is a fine thing, but generally it's a good idea to choose something a bit less iconic. Viewed side by side, it looks a bit like Raquel has been upholstered in brown velvet for White Dwarf, or at least gone in for a double helping of spray-on tan.
(Pether did go on to become a dandy fantasy illustrator, to be fair, and I wish him the best.)
