Ha! All of my music is now rated in iTunes. All 7511 songs. (Yow.) I wanted to finish up before Pinewoods, for optimal road trip listening, and I did. Go me. The breakdown is:

* 30
** 804
*** 4664
**** 1969
***** 44

One star (not that y'all care) indicates a song I probably never want to hear again, and five stars are reserved for my favorite songs of all time. Two and four stars are attached to songs if I find I'm disappointed or pleased, respectively, when they show up in rotation, and three songs are for everything else.

Since I've set my iPod to copy all of my 4- and 5-star songs, that means I'll have all of my favorite music handy most of the time. It's also set to hold all of the songs I buy from ITMS (so I'll have a backup in case of a crash), anything I've added to the library in the past two months, and a random 11 GB of anything rated * to *** that hasn't been played in the last month, plus a couple of specific mixes and albums. That seems to be a good mix for me, though since I love tweaking things so much I imagine I'll tweak it some more.

(*tweak tweak*)

"yow" is right!! How long did rating all those songs take?? I'm impressed you didn't find that your scale started sliding the more songs you rated; I'd rate 10, then 15, then go back and re-rate the first 10, then do another bunch, then re-rate the first bunch again... ;)

My rating system is reasonably similar to yours:

0: Haven't heard it yet, or forgot to rate it, or it's a different version of something I like better in another version. (148, 112 of which are unchecked)

1: A song I don't want to hear again. I uncheck the checkbox next to it, and set the iPod sync to not take unchecked songs. (147)

2: A song I'm not thrilled about but don't have an active antipathy towards. Over time, I sometimes change a 2 to a 1. (656)

3: Everything that doesn't get another rating. (3594)

4: Songs I strongly like, and want to hear more often than 3s. (474)

5: Songs I love. (30)

I keep everything but the unchecked songs on my iPod; it all fits, so I might as well. (But I only have about 5000 songs, and 2000 of those are Rise Up Singing snippets that are usually a third to half the size of a real song.) Sometime in the next year or two I'll probably run out of space, at which point I'll probably either move to a bigger iPod or remove the 2-star songs.

(Re hearing more often: I have a complicated smart playlist that tends to result in roughly the 800 songs I've heard least recently (that are rated 2 through 5), plus another 200 or so more-recently-heard 4s and 5s. Then I put it on shuffle play.)

...What *are* your top 44? (I think there are ways to export and/or copy/paste the titles of songs in a playlist, so you don't have to type 'em in by hand.)
