Today was the "play day" for OGRE, the Oberlin Gaming and Roleplaying Establishment, which K. and I decided to attend. It was better in theory than in practice; most everyone was involved in long-term games when we got there (Godstorm Risk and a one-shot D&D campaign), so we only actually gamed with one person—a lad who, I suspect, took one for the team by entertaining the faculty (and faculty-spousal-analogue) newcomers. Faculty attendance is a feather in the cap of any undergrad organization, and they didn't want us to be bored, and so he bowed out of the second game of Risk and gamed with the old folks. That said, we and he had a lot of fun playing Master Labyrinth and Give Me the Brain, and everyone was pleasant and welcoming when I was watching them play Risk afterward. They were, in all important respects, SWIL (or the gaming arm thereof), down to the titles they introduced themselves by, the dithering, the slightly forced acronym. I felt very much at home.

Unfortunately, due to a planning snafu, the gaming fell apart about an hour after we got there: they'd scheduled a Changeling LARP for the same evening, so I didn't get to play anything else after K. left for dinner. I have high hopes for future gaming sessions, though, since the basic concept was sound, if this particular implentation was not—and I can't really complain about the LARP, since an abundance of cute young things in bodices and cat-ears and bellydancing garb showed up to play it. One of them was one of K.'s students, which led to a bit of shrieking and giggling on her part and bemusement on mine; she gave me fudge (which she claimed was chocolate mousse, though I knew better) and burbled excitedly about finally meeting me. (K., she tells me, is "Shiny! Shiny shiny shiny!")

I suppose I was a bit melancholy after leaving, since all of my SWILfolk are far away, and I can't really ever be a part of OGRE the way I was of SWIL. But I went out walking, and my iPod started playing Dire Straits' So Far Away as I stepped into the chilly autumn night, so I felt all hip and skulky. I bought a chick parm and rented Kentucky Fried Movie and had my own little college night.

N.B.: It occurred to me, while playing Master Labyrinth, that if it were released today it would probably be a Harry Potter tie-in. It's really perfect, down to the seals marking the four players' starting spots (which would become the four Houses) and the "collecting items for Potions class" theme. I see a marketing gold mine here....

Oberlin has a gaming and roleplaying establishment?

My friend Kelly ('07) was disappointed to discover it lacked a scifi club, but it apparently had other nifty people.

Isn't that the whole point of LARPs? Long live the silly clothing.
