While out walking a few days ago, I saw something on the plants I'd never seen before: fragile, dendritic, almost fluffy ice structures on the edges and tips of the leaves. They looked remarkably like certain crystals grown in solution; I'm not at all sure what combination of temperature and moisture and pressure made them form in air. I took some pictures, which I offer below for admir- or explan-ation.

That's really pretty rime ice. That and the little tufts of hoarfrost poking out of the ground in the morning were a particularly nice part of the southern part of the Appalachian Trail in the early spring. I don't know why it doesn't happen as much up north.

Why, so it is. Thanks! It apparently happens when fog freezes, which is kind of cool in its own right.

On the other hand this is what really heavy duty rime looks like -- also pretty if a bit less dainty. :-)
